However, unless you are looking for a neat little computer project to do, by far the easiest way to have a server with friends is just to run it on the device you’re playing on. If you have a spare computer lying around you might be able to see if it’s capable of hosting, or look around on Craigslist/Facebook marketplace for a basic computer. I’ve seen a couple people do it around the internet and these subreddits but personally haven’t tried. Scenarios require the player to complete a certain objective in a set time limit whilst sandbox allows the player to build a more flexible park with optionally no restrictions or finance. OpenRCT2 allows for both scenario and sandbox play. The player must try to make a profit and maintain a good park reputation whilst keeping the guests happy. Probably the most cost efficient (but maybe the hardest) way to do it is to get a raspberry pi to host the server. The gameplay revolves around building and maintaining an amusement park containing attractions, shops and facilities.
OPENRCT2 MULTIPLAYER TUTORIAL PC
You don’t need a beefy pc to run this game so you’ll just have to do research on how much you’re willing to spend. Depending on how technical you are with computers there’s a ton of ways to do it.

If you want anyone to be able to log into the server at any time, yes it will have to be on at all times.
OPENRCT2 MULTIPLAYER TUTORIAL MOD
Well, I’ve never seen or heard of anyone that set up a cloud server, frankly I think that’s pretty overkill and you’d likely end up paying some reoccurring cost to do so. late bump, I would like to point people to OpenRCT2 if they are in need of one of the best mod packs around, an entire game engine that runs RCT2 with Steam Overlay support, high resolution support, online play, and allows for RCT2 to be played on Mac and Linux operating systems also. A folder selection dialog will pop up - navigate to the folder where your RCT1 files are and click Open. Go to the sixth tab (the spanner), and click the box under Path to RCT1 installation. Hey guys Im completely new to openrct2 but really excited because I havent played roller coaster tycoon in a while but me and some of my old friends are looking to get back into it. If you are hosting the server on a dedicated pc like the previous points, openRCT2 has an auto save feature, so if it’s always running you most likely don’t need to worry about saves unless you are needing to do maintenance, or change the map etc. Launch OpenRCT2 and go to the Options menu (top right on the title screen). If you are hosting the server on your personal device that you are going to turn off and on as you need it, you’ll need to save each time you close the server. Everyone else is able to save and work on their own time, but their changes won’t be made on the server if they do this (unless you were exchanging park files with each other but that defeats the point of a shared server). The only device that NEEDS to save the game is the one hosting the server. This goes with the first point of having a dedicated server pc. To have your server be on at all times, you’ll need a device to be on at all times. You are forwarding the ports for the device that will be hosting the server. This is useful if you’re setting up a dedicated server pc, since no one is playing the game on that device, it doesn’t need to spend its resources displaying the game. Headless mode lets the multiplayer server run the logic of the game without the need to display it.
